Open for ideas, evidence and questions.
What we know
About 4,365 homes in Banbhoolpura stand on land claimed by the railways. The High Court ordered eviction in December 2022. In 2023 the Supreme Court stayed the order, saying 50,000 people could not be uprooted overnight.
In February 2026 the Supreme Court recognised the railways' claim but required a rehabilitation process, including housing applications for occupants. A demolition in the area was followed by deadly violence in February 2024.
Open questions
- What does the rehabilitation process include, and how many occupants have applied for housing?
- Where would families be moved, and how far from their work and schools?
- How have other cities handled large settlements on railway land?
