Lakhs of teacher posts empty
In 2025 a parliamentary committee flagged nearly 10 lakh vacant teaching posts in schools and asked the government to stop filling them with contract teachers.

What we know
In December 2023 the Education Ministry reported more than 8.4 lakh vacant teaching posts in government elementary and secondary schools. Even central schools are short: Kendriya Vidyalayas and Navodaya schools had more than 13,000 vacant teaching posts in March 2026.
