Youth emigration, unemployment and state debt
Many young people leave Kerala to find work, while the state carries heavy debt and argues with the Centre over how much it may borrow.
Open for ideas, evidence and questions.
What we know
Young people leave Kerala for work, and unemployment at home remains a long-running problem.
The state carries heavy debt and has a running dispute with the Centre over borrowing limits. In Feb 2026 the Assembly passed a resolution against what it called the Centre's "fiscal embargo".
Open questions
- How many young people leave Kerala each year, and which jobs do they take abroad or in other states?
- How large is the state's debt, and how much of each year's budget goes on interest?
- How are borrowing limits for states set, and how have Kerala's limits changed?
