Displacement and compensation in Ayodhya
Shops and houses in Ayodhya were demolished for redevelopment. Many residents and traders say they were paid too little, and a land-acquisition challenge awaits a Supreme Court verdict.
Open for ideas, evidence and questions.
What we know
Shops and houses were demolished for road widening during Ayodhya's redevelopment. The administration says ₹1,253 crore was paid in compensation. Residents on government-leased (nazul) land were paid only for their buildings, not the land, and traders say their payouts were far too low.
On 26 October 2026 the Supreme Court reserved judgment on a challenge to land acquisition for three housing schemes.
Open questions
- How many families and shops were displaced, and how much did each receive?
- What rules decide compensation for people living on government-leased land?
- Where did displaced traders reopen, and have their incomes recovered?
