No record of what happens inside police stations
The Supreme Court ordered working CCTV in every police station in 2020. In 2025 it reopened the issue after custodial deaths in stations without working cameras.
Open for ideas, evidence and questions.
What we know
In Paramvir Singh Saini v Baljit Singh (December 2020), the Supreme Court ordered CCTV cameras with night vision in every police station, including interrogation rooms. In September 2025 it opened a case on its own after a report of 11 custodial deaths in Rajasthan in seven to eight months. In November 2025 it said the Centre was taking the Court "too lightly" and asked every state for a compliance affidavit.
Body cameras, which record an officer's encounters outside the station, are not required by any national rule.
Open questions
- How many police stations in your district have working cameras in every room, and how long is footage kept?
- Which police units in your state wear body cameras, and who can get the recordings?
- Has any court case in your state been decided on police-station footage?
