Firozabad's glass industry in crisis
Firozabad makes about 70% of India's glass. US tariffs and gas cuts have cut output by about 40% since 2025.
Open for ideas, evidence and questions.
What we know
Firozabad makes about 70% of India's glass and employs about 2 lakh people directly and 5 lakh indirectly. When the Taj protection order forced a switch to gas in the 1990s, only about a third of units survived.
In 2025 came US tariffs of 50%. Since March 2026 gas supplies have been cut by over 20%, and output has fallen about 40%. Units that employed 500 people now employ under 200.
Open questions
- How many glass units have shut since 2025, and how many workers have lost work?
- How is gas priced and allocated to the Firozabad cluster?
- What support could help the cluster find new markets?
