Deaths in police and judicial custody
Every year well over 100 people die in police custody and more than 2,000 in judicial custody, and few of these deaths end with anyone held accountable.
Open for ideas, evidence and questions.
What we know
The National Human Rights Commission registered about 160 cases of death in police custody and more than 2,300 cases of death in judicial custody in 2023-24. The NCRB counts custodial deaths differently and reports lower numbers. District officials must report every custodial death to the Commission within 24 hours.
